{"id":62,"date":"2021-03-19T04:09:09","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T04:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csd.cjo.mybluehost.me\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2021-03-19T04:09:09","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T04:09:09","slug":"what-a-club-meeting-is-like","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/the-brewins.com\/index.php\/what-a-club-meeting-is-like\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s a Meeting Like?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Thanks for taking interest in a Brewins meeting, my goal is to give a good idea what a typical meeting is like such as\u00a0 meeting rules, code of conduct, cadence and atmosphere.\u00a0 I hope to make a potential member feel comfortable to show up to our beer focused laid-back club meeting.\u00a0 Check our site\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/csd.cjo.mybluehost.me\/?page_id=41\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/csd.cjo.mybluehost.me\/?page_id=47\">Club Meeting<\/a> section for current meeting and location info.\u00a0 Feel free to show up at our next meeting or contact <a href=\"mailto:Riponbrewins@gmail.com\">Riponbrewins@gmail.com<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Club meetings are typically held on the third Friday of odd numbered months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even numbered months the club hangs out at a local brewery, for beer and often a tour of the brewery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:30 pm optional social hour<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social hour is a good time to eat dinner (if you want to bring or pick up at local restaurants), drink commercial beers, hang-out, and talk about non-meeting related items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check in Style of the Month beers to member for later competition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put on white board home brews to share&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:00 pm <\/strong><strong>Meeting starts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The President goes over club meeting rules\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NO religion talk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NO political talk &#8211; only exception is during club board member voting month&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NO cross talking &#8211; respect everyone&#8217;s ability to talk and be heard.&nbsp; Social hour was added to help with cross talking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NO irresponsible drinking.&nbsp; Don\u2019t drink &amp; drive and don\u2019t get hammered.&nbsp; We are a homebrew club not a drinking club<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NO commercial beer during meeting other than Mystery Beer (described below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between meeting agenda items, we share our homebrew.&nbsp; Each member discusses the brew while being poured<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>President calls for an officer report.&nbsp; Club Vice President, Treasure, Secretary, and Member at Large give updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical agenda- Below list some of the activities that are done at club meetings.&nbsp; Not all the activities are done at each meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Upcoming Events &#8211; <\/strong>Open to all members to talk about any up and coming events which might interest the members, or charity events that the club is pouring at.&nbsp; Each year the club donates to several local charities by brewing, pouring and promoting local events, such as Sober Grad, High School Boosters, and American Legion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prior Events Status &#8211; <\/strong>Updates on previous club events and current club programs such as the sour barrel and whisky stout barrel projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guest speaker or lecture.<\/strong>&nbsp; In the past we have had local breweries give talks and members have given brew education sessions such as yeast propagation &amp; health, sour beer basics, and water chemistry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gadget of the month <\/strong>&#8211; Many homebrewers love the gadgets that are involved in making better more efficient brew.&nbsp; This is a time for members to tell about a new product or gadget they are using or recently seen and want advice or to tell other members about.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. homebrew- <\/strong>&nbsp;All homebrewers at some point will brew a beer that is not great.&nbsp; Sometimes the brewer has a good idea what they did wrong, but many times they have no idea.&nbsp; This is the time that a member can pour their beer and get non-judgmental feedback on how to what could be wrong with and how to fix their brew.&nbsp; This time is also dedicated to beer off flavor sensory training by learning what off flavors taste like and their causes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mystery beer-<\/strong>&nbsp; An unknown commercial beer is poured to club members.&nbsp; Each member guesses it&#8217;s ABV, IBU, BJCP style and beer.&nbsp; The winner earns a prize.&nbsp; This doubles as <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.bjcp.org\/\">BJCP<\/a> judge training for several of our members who are or intend to be BJCP judge certified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Style of the quarter<\/strong> -Every three months there is a selected style which members can brew and bring to the meeting for a club night competition.&nbsp; The best beer to the style wins the \u201cGolden Growler\u201d.&nbsp; The Golden Growler is a gold colored growler filled with a local breweries beer.&nbsp; All the styles are chosen a year in advance around October.&nbsp; The styles are chosen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bjcp.org\/docs\/2015_Guidelines_Beer.pdf\">BJCP 2015 style guidelines<\/a> and are intended to get brewers to brew something out of their comfort zone.&nbsp; Every year there are a couple non BJCP style beers such as cookie beer, extreme low alcohol beer, candy beer, mead, or cider.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9PM Club meeting ends&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drive time social hour.&nbsp; As hard as we try not to drink too much at the meeting, sometimes a little more time is needed prior to hitting the road.&nbsp; After the meeting we have a post meeting social hour either at a walking distance member house, Taqueria Mexican Restaurant,&nbsp;
